Comares – Malaga

Comares is one of the highest white villages in Andalucia at 739 metres above sea level. Comares can be spied for miles around, rising high above the surrounding countryside and resembling a natural extension to the craggy rock face. Also known as the Balcon de la Axarquia. To the east, views stretch away of majestic Mount Maroma, Lake Vinuela and other mountain villages, Periana, Canillas de Aceituno and Alcaucin.

Main information

Throughout the village of Comares in Malaga, there are colourful ceramic plaques depicting Comares´ important place in history, which can be traced back to the third century BC. The village was one of the principle defensive bastions of Omar Ben Hafsun and during the early times of the Moorish caliphs in Cordoba, protected what are now the ruins of the local capital on the Mazmullar plateau, some four kilometres from the village and worth a visit.

Ancient traditions of drying grapes on the hillsides can be seen: Comares is on the ‘Ruta del Pasa‘ which celebrates the harvest and dried raisins which are made into the delicious sweet wine, ‘musto’. A great way to discover Comares is with a leisurely walk, to help you get your bearings. Follow the ceramic footprints around the village, which guide you through the cobbled streets passing by fascinating historic buildings, the ancient castle and lovely old cemetery.

For the daredevils Comares is now home to the longest zipwire in Europe, from the village to the hill opposite. It is located next to the Via Ferrata la Fuente Gorda to the north of the village. It is an exciting  436 metres long.

Some of the most representative dishes of Comares are its gazpachuelo (a hake and potato soup made with vinegar and mayonnaise), the sopa de puchero (a stew with chickpeas, vegetables and meat) and chivo (young goat) used in several of typical dishes of the region.

Fiestas

    • January – Fiesta de San Hilario de Poitiers, This festivity consists of a procession by the patron saint of the village, accompanied by verdiales dances and songs. At midday residents and visitors alike can enjoy a lunch and in the evening the fun begins with the local open-air dance.
    • July – Feria de los Ventorros

    • August – Feria Comares, which is enjoyed by the entire village. It begins with the traditional firework display and then the fun begins, which is guaranteed to get everyone enjoying themselves. Open-air dances, concerts, horse racing and sports competitions complete the programme of activities.
