Some historians place here the famous battle of Munda between Julius Caesar and the Pompey brothers. It seem certain that with the entry of the Muslims to the peninsula, the lands where Monda is located today were integrated into the defensive system of the Guadalhorce Valley in Malaga. And that is why they built the castle of Monda in Malaga.

After the conquest of Monda in Malaga by the Christian troops, Muslims were allowed to stay in their properties. The coexistence of the inhabitants never became completely peaceful but was maintained until 1568 when there was a Moorish rebellion due to the injustices that they suffered, in which they burned many towns. After that, Muslims were expelled and their properties given to new inhabitants who came from the north of Castilla.

Fiestas

  • Dia de la Sopa Mondena – It takes place on the last Sunday in March, a traditional local soup is served to the village and visitors. It is made from 120kg of stale bread, tomates de culo (dried tomatoes) and vegetables. The origins of the festival date back to the 19th century – the thick broth provided a nutritious meal for the miners. It is made in a one-piece carved wooden bowl.
  • Feria de San Roque – Traditionally it is celebrated from 11th to 20th of August. It is celebrated to honour San Roque, the Patron Saint of the town.
