Main information

Monturque in Cordoba is derived from a Mozarabic name meaning “rocky mountain”. It was an important town in Roman times, as can be seen from the numerous archaeological discoveries made here. It was also important in Arab times, until it was captured by Ferdinand III in 1240, after which it became known as Monturqueto.

The well-preserved tower from the castle ‘Castille de Monturque’, Torre del Homenaje, stands in the center of the Patio de Armas. A sober and simple structure, this tower was the best equipped of the castle to house its guests, who would probably only spend short stays here, as it does not show signs of having been adapted for permanent accommodation. The castle and tower are located on Calle de Rafael de Lara.

Monturque in Cordoba was an integral part of the Marquesado de Priego, founded by concession of the Catholic Monarchs in 1501. In 1709 it came to depend on the House of Medinaceli, by a union of the two lineages.

The great Roman Cistern sits under the town’s cemetery and was discovered coincidentally in 1885 while the ground was dug up to expand the small cemetery that existed next to the Parroquia de San Mateo. The cistern’s principal function was to collect and store rainwater, with a capacity of about 850,000 litres. The large cistern can befound on Calle de Rafael de Lara

Mirador de los Paseillos is the viewpoint with an impressive balcony from which you can enjoy a vast panorama of the countryside. It is unsurprising that this site has been dubbed the Balcon del Mundo (Balcony of the World). From here you can visit the archaeological site of Los Paseillos.

Traditional dishes to try when visiting Monturque in Cordoba include conejo en salsa de almendras (rabbit in almond sauce), morcilla de sesos (black pudding made using pork brain), potaje de bacalao (cod stew) and castanas con arroz (chestnuts with rice).
