The town Puerto Lope established since Roman times, became important during the period of Muslim occupation where it became a free trade port. This due to its strategic location between the Kingdom of Granada and the Crown of Castilla. Because it was one of only three places along the entire border from Algeciras to Almeria, where trading could take place.

At the time of the French occupation the town was burned and destroyed because of its resistance to the enemy and later repopulated by people from Asturias and that is the reason why the surname Argüelles (typical from North Spain) is so common in the area nowadays.
