Santiago de Calatrava in Jaen is an attractive little town surrounded by olive groves to the west of the province. With less than 1,000 in habitants, except in the summer months when many return to the family house to escape the heat of summer in the larger towns and cities.

The traditional cuisine of Santiago de Calatrava shares forms and foods with the rest of the municipalities of the countryside, whether it is the rest of Jaen or the neighboring and nearby Cordoba. In this way, the gazpacho from Jaen and the Cordovan salmorejo coexist in this town in perfect gastronomic harmony.

Located near the town of Martos, 20kms to the east and the provincial capital Jaen 42 km to the east. It’s a historical town where Roman and Arab remains have been found and the attractive Barroque church Iglesia Virgen de la Estrella and the Ayuntamiento – Town Hall, form it’s centre.

For a small town it has a lot going on. It has a theatre, a gym and a municipal pool (only open in the summer months) which has a bar offering a good choice of dishes. Each approach to this small town is through an enormous expanse of olive groves which panoramic views, head further west and you are soon in the province of Cordoba.
