Teba – Malaga

Teba in Malaga is a lovely town placed on the top of a hill. Different archaeological sites of the town indicate that the territory of Teba was populated since Palaeolithic and that it has been an Iberian, Roman and an Arab settlement. It was incorporated in to the Corona de Castilla in 1330 by Alfonso XI.

Main information

The town Teba in Malaga province where the municipality must have been inhabited since ancient times. As evidenced by some stone and bronze tools found in Pilarejo and Cueva de las Palomas.

But it was in Roman times when Teba in Malaga, known as Attegua, was an important location in which battles between supporters of Julio Cesar and those of Pompeyo took place. The Romans built the first defensive structure in what is now called Teba la Vieja and later the Muslims reinforced and extended the castle, giving it an important enclosure whose remains can still be visited.

It was in Arab times, when the population began to move from the top of the hill to the current location of the town that the Muslims called it ‘Ostipo’.

In August 1330, the battle of Teba in Malaga took place and Muslims fought against Alfonso XI and some Scottish noblemen, lead by Sir James Douglas. The result was the conquest of the castle but Sir Douglas died on the battlefield. The Scottish were on their way to the Holy Land but they decided to help the King of Castilla on his willing to reconquer and Christianize all the Muslim territories in the Peninsula.

Fiestas

  • Feria Santo Toribio – This fair takes place on 10th, 11th and 12th of August. It is to celebrate and honour Santo Toribio, the Patron Saint of the town.
  • Jornadas de Sir James Douglas – At the end of July, during three days, lots of different cultural events take place in commemoration of the death of Sir Douglas, a famous Scottish nobleman who had an important role in the conquest of Castillo de la Estrella, which is the name of the castle of Teba. People from all the towns of Malaga come to enjoy this festival.
  • Feria del Queso – Celebrated in the first days of October. Around more than fifty companies, mostly artisan cheesemakers from all over Andalucia have composed the section of the market, and it is an exceptional opportunity to acquire products of excellent quality, elaborated in a totally artisan way, by the best master cheese makers. There are also cheese, wine, oil and honey tastings.
