Iberians founded the city of Osqva, the first village placed in this location.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, there is no documentation during several centuries. Historians assume that people living here, went to Antakira (now Antequera) looking for protection.

During the Al-Andalus era the castle of Xebar  was built to control the crossing from the centre of Al-Andalus to the coast. It was destroyed and rebuilt twice before the conquest of Granada by Fernando el Catolico. After that, the castle was abandoned by the Arabs. On the XVIII the town recovered its importance with the construction of the Camino Real, a road from Malaga to Madrid.
