Zuheros – Cordoba

Zuheros in Cordoba is one of the most beautiful Spanish white washed towns in the province. It is famous for its narrow streets and its castle carved into the rock. Other characteristic buildings of the town are the church built in XVI century, its archaeological museum or its museum of arts and popular constumbres. Zuheros is also famous because of the Murcielagos (Bats) Cave.

Main information

The beautiful town of Zuheros in Cordoba province where historians think that the first settlement in this location was on the 9th century. Just when the soldiers of Banu Himsi, a muslim leader, built a castle on the rocks. Rocks where called “sujaira” which means “unassailable rocks” and this could have been the origin of the name of the town.

The locality originally belonged to the cora, a territorial division, of Elvira (Granada), and was fortified at the end of the 12th century. Alfonso X ‘El Sabio’ gave it to his son, the Infante Don Juan, but, following the breach of an agreement, Sancho IV ordered its conquest to the council of Cordoba in 1293, remaining until today under its jurisdiction. Nowadays most of the population of Zuheros work on agriculture, olive trees mainly and also cattle farming.

Fiestas

  • 15th of May – Romeria San Isidro Labrador. On this day, people from the town get ready “carrozas” to go with the procession of San Isidro to “el llano de la Cueva” a place in the countryside where a Mass and other religious events are celebrated.
  • 15th of August – Fiestas Patronales de la Virgen del Rosario. It is a tradition to organize games and contests for the children. For example “cucanas” “botijos” filled with different gifts that children have to break with their eyes covered.
  • 14th of September – Festividad de Jesus Nazareno. A procession is celebrated to honour the Patron Saint of the town, Jesus Nazareno.
