Pedrera – Seville

The town Pedrera in Seville its name comes form the quarry of high quality stone located in the vicinity. (In Spanish pedrera means stone quarry.)
The first human settlements date back to the Calcolithic period, of which remains have been found in artificial caves.

Locality belonging to the Campina district and located at the feet of Sierra Becerrero, in back of Estepa. Pedrera in Seville has a landscape that comprises farmland used to cultivate olives and cereals. Its most important monuments are the Hermitage del Carmen. The town has a variety of manor houses, originally typical farm-houses,along with a hospital dating to the seventeenth century.

A natural area of Pedrera in Seville is located in the region of the Sierra Sur that belongs to the Sevillian subbetica, extending through the municipalities of Estepa and Pedrera. In 2004, the idea was to exploit a quarry in this area, but it was opposed by the locals, who mounted a short film against the project called “El Grito de la Sierra”.

When visiting Pedrera, try their local dishes such as tortas de mateca (sweet torts usually made during winter), tortillitas de bacalao (cod fritters.
