El Burgo – Malaga

El Burgo in Malaga Province is a mountainous town of the District of Sierra de las Nieves. It has a very remote history behind it. It is noteworthy that this town even managed to have the Roman imperial privilege as it was one of the places of forced path of the soldiers.

Main information

It is dominated by the limestone outcrops of the surrounding mountains of the Serrania de Ronda. The bizarre rock formations of El Torrecilla (1900m) and its surrounding parque natural overlook the town and provide the source for the Rio Turon that runs through it. El Burgo in Malaga and its Ri­o Turon is barely a stream as it passes through the town, but it provided sustenance for human settlements as long ago as the 8th century BC.

Its earliest settlers would have husbanded sheep and goats, as well as meagre crops in protected valleys.

On the way down into town of El Burgo in Malaga, to the main commercial area is dominated by a large hotel, Iglesia de San Sebastian. This is the second church of the pueblo and for religious occasions, Ermita de San Agustin is also used. The town hall, built in the 18th century, is also worthy of note. Leading out on the Ardales road is the old pack horse bridge, known at Puente Malaga (Malaga Bridge). Its foundations are said to be Roman, but a close inspection suggests medieval at the earliest.

For an excellent panoramic vision of El Burgo in Malaga and its surroundings, there is no better place than the Monument-Mirador al Guarda Forestal. At 900 meters above sea level, the views are simply hypnotic; with forests of firs, pines and oaks of the Sierra de las Nieves and the head of the Turon River basin as a mark.

Fiestas

  • 24/28th of February – Week of the Villages. One of the most popular celebrations in the town of El Burgo in Malaga. The events are organized by the City Council and the Costa del Sol Tourist Board with theatrical performances, dance competitions and musical performances.
  • 4th of August – Romeria Virgen Fuensanta
  • 26/30th of August – Local festivities for San Agustin
