Main information

In the year 740 the Muslims established a fortress on the Hill, for five centuries it was under the Muslim mandate, until in the year 1240 it was incorporated into the Crown of Castile. This town has several archaeological sites that show the existence of human settlements dating from the Paleolithic era.

The castle of Almodovar del Rio in Cordoba is located on a 252-meter hill. Its construction dates from the year 720, carried out by the Muslims, in 1901 The Count of Torralva began the reconstruction of the castle that would last until 1936. The Old Embarcadero, Portus Romano, on the banks of the Guadalquivir River as it passes through the town there are vestiges of an old jetty that could be of Roman origin. Traditionally it has been a point of embarkation to cross the river before the construction of the bridge over the CO-3313. In the nearby villages of Villaseca or the Temple, among others, remains of Roman villas, kilns and pottery of olearian amphorae have been found, destined to be exported in riverside boats by the Guadalquivir. The environment offers a privileged situation to observe the flora and fauna of the riverbank and magnificent views of the river and the castle.

The Chapel of the Hospital de la Caridad was a simple chapel with the hermitage of the old Hospital de la Caridad. It dates from the s. XVI, being the oldest religious building in the town. In 1521 it was blessed by Bishop Cristobal Fernandez Barrionuevo and in 1593 it was rebuilt taking its current image. At Easter, several of the steps that cross the town leave this temple, constituting a picturesque image with the figure of the castle of Almodovar del Rio Castle in Cordoba in the background.

Fiestas

  • 28th of March – Souk of the Enchantment. This Andalusian souk is held every year in the vicinity of the Almodovar castle in Cordoba province to commemorate the legend of Zaida, “la Encanta”. During a weekend it proposes multiple activities such as a craft and gastronomy market, participatory workshops, street entertainment, children’s activities and attractions, a display of ancient trades, etc. Highlighting its central act on Saturday night: the theatrical representation of the Legend of the Enchantment. A spectacular multidisciplinary montage with more than 40 actors and video mapping projections on the towers and walls of the castle.

  • Second Saturday in May – Pilgrimage of the Virgin of Fatima. The events in honor of the Virgin of Fatima, when the traditional Roma offering is celebrated.
  • Saint Juan festivity – A festival recovered from an ancient tradition that is celebrated on the Carretera de la Estacion. On that magical night, the children go out in a parade with watermelons pierced and decorated as a lamppost. In addition, the elderly can buy San Juan pears in traditional stalls set up by different groups and enjoy free tastings. This festival takes up an old custom and tries to be faithful to how it was done then, when the market gardeners of the town that night put their fruit stalls, especially pears from San Juan.
  • July – Lunatic Night. With the full moon in July, a nocturnal cultural evening is celebrated similar to a white night with different stages and musical performances or from different areas spread through the streets and squares of the town.
  • Around 7th of October – Feria de Nuestra Senora del Rosario. Fair in honor of the patron saint of the town Almodovar del Rio in Cordoba. It begins with the inauguration of the lighting and fireworks and ends with the traditional evening of flamenco singing on Monday. This popular festival is completed with typical costumes, horseback rides, a day of ancient games and varied shows. On Sunday the image of the Virgen del Rosario processions through the streets of the town.
